Buck had to admit that the trek through the mountain was much easier this time. Not only was the path opened and smoothed out to make a reasonable passage, but they also didn't have to worry about orcs hidden in every crevice along the way. The path down out of the mountains was a whole other issue. There was a game trail of sorts that led off the mountain side and down into the valley below. It took them most of the day just to get down the mountain side, and nothing even resembling a road was to be found in any direction that they could see.

Camp that night was also a tense affair. Twice the watch ran off inquisitive wildlife—a bear on the first watch and three wolves on the third watch. Even so, the night passed without violent issue. The six men started their trek down the valley just after sunrise. They found themselves following the stream as it headed toward what looked like the mouth of the valley. The sun was getting low by the time they reached what looked to be a narrow mountain pass.

They had passed through an abundant valley all day on their way to the opening of this pass, and it seemed odd to Buck that no one had moved into it. The question was answered in the second watch of camp that night. Buck woke to gunfire and rolled out of his bed scrambling for his own weapon.

In the reflected firelight he could see several pairs of glowing eyes. Joe, who had drawn watch that shift and had fired into the dark, answered in a shaky voice when Buck yelled, "What is it? What is the threat?"

Joe stammered, "They're big and look like dog men."

Buck frowned and he noticed that both Rattle and Ripper were already on their feet with weapons drawn as well. "Dog men?" he asked. "You mean more orcs?"

Joe shook his head, "These were different." Hearing this, Rattle and Ripper pushed into the brush, in search of whatever it was that had Joe shooting in the middle of the night.

A few moments later, they both came back dragging a creature that neither of them had ever seen before. It looked to be just over nine feet tall with spindly legs. It was wearing ratty leather body armor and carried crude but effective steel blades. Its head looked as if it belonged to a large, snarling dog.

Buck let out a snort of amazement and said, "Okay, dogmen it is. . .at least until someone can tell me better. Double up on the guard and we'll be ready to move out by morning."

The night passed with no further disruptions and morning had them traveling the pass out of the valley. They followed a stream as it widened the further it went on, picking up more run off from the mountains with every little stream.

The pass was far longer than any of them expected, and they ended up camping on an especially narrow patch.
